Signs promote responding to census

The push is on, getting people to fill out the census if they haven't already.

Because of the pandemic, it recently was announced that the census taking would end a month early, at the end of September.

Over the past several days, since the latest Community Census Challenge results were posted, which showed Bartow in fourth place, lagging behind (in order from the top:) Davenport, Polk City and Auburndale, responding is important.

The results determine funding from the federal government, among other important determinations, which it is why it's imperative people fill out the forms. Recently, it has been publicized that there now will start in-person interviews.

It has been acknowledged by some that in addition to the pandemic having suppressed the number of people from responding, there has been controversy over this year's effort, primarily whether non-citizens (here legally or otherwise) should be included. Among those not here legally, it's been reported by major news media that there is a fear that filling out the form might lead to being discovered and consequently deported; this despite assurances that such information is confidential and not shared with other federal agencies, particularly ICE and other law enforcement entities.
