Time Running Out to Be Counted in Census

Last updated 9/23/2020 at 8:10am

Unless the courts rule otherwise, the 2020 Census count draws to a close Sept. 30, a month ahead of the original October 31 date, due to the pandemic. If you haven't already responded, please do.

The more households that do, the better our state, county and community prosper. That's because not only does the ultimate tally determine how many seats Florida is assigned in the U.S. House of Representatives, it also determines how much federal funding is allocated.

Meantime, as regards the Community Census Challenge, Bartow has slipped and now is in fifth place. It's a far fall from when at the beginning we were tied for first with Polk City. For awhile we were in second place and held on to third when Auburndale began to surpass us. Then we dropped to fourth place until this most recent report.

The count this week shows Davenport at 67.7 percent. Polk City, which for the longest time seemed next to impossible to dislodge, comes in at 66.6 percent. Auburndale is hot on Polk City's heels, at 66.2 percent. However, Highland City has sneaked past Bartow, but just by a little more than a whisker. It now sits at fourth place, with 65.5 percent to Bartow's 65.3 percent.

Rounding out the bottom is Lake Hamilton at 51.2 percent, Dundee at 48.8 percent, and Frostproof at 46.8 percent.

County-wise, Polk is at 61 percent, while Florida is 62.8 percent. The nationwide response is 66 percent.
